Democratic and Republican   Views On Abortion

Abortion is a highly controversial issue in America. Although it is legal across the country as of January 23, 2016, many people believe it shouldnt be, for many different reasons. Although my personal stance on the matter is pro-choice, I will be explaining both stances on the subject. Before doing any research, based on what I already know about both parties, I think the Democrats would agree with me that abortion is a womans choice, and after doing some more in-depth research, I came to the same conclusion, as I originally did, that the majority of Democrats are pro-choice and the majority of Republicans are Pro-life.

First, Ill start off with one of the most common arguments used against abortion; that its killing babies. Many Republicans use this argument because they claim that life begins at the moment of conception, thus making abortion murder. Democrats would argue that most abortions happen in the first trimester, before the baby develops a heartbeat or a brain, making it not alive. A fetus also relies completely on the mother, so many say it cannot be seen as a separate entity.

Another argument the Republican party uses is that if abortion is outlawed, people will become more cautious and use birth control. This, if used in a debate, is quickly shot down by Democrats by using two arguments, the first being that many abortions are from the woman who was sexually assaulted and had no choice in the matter, and the other being that only 8% of babies aborted were conceived without some form of birth control.

To finish off is another commonly used idea Pro-lifers use, which is that a better alternative to abortion is adoption. Besides the argument that you are still forcing a woman to go through hours of labor, theirs also the low adoption rate in America. Unfortunately, the older a child gets, the lower the chance of adoption becomes, and growing up in foster homes, being passed around every 2 or 3 years, isnt exactly the happiest childhood. This argument boils down to what is morally right, which is a gray area.

There are, of course, many other arguments for both sides. These Six arent even the tip of the iceberg. My stance still remains firmly the democratic, pro-choice outlook. This is because as I briefly mentioned in the second to last paragraph, even If you put up a baby for adoption, youre still forcing a woman to suffer through 9 months of pregnancy and hours of labor for a baby she does not want in the first place, and I personally think that that is wrong, much worse than killing babies that arent really alive in the first place.
